The holiday season is in full swing, houses are decorated, Christmas trees are up light up, and the music is playing! Whether it’s a classic like Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer or modern hit such as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”, nothing showcases the holiday spirt more than music.
Holiday music dates to the 4th century with Christmas hymns and the 13th century with carols. Oddly enough, carols were not originally sung to celebrate the holiday season, rather they were sung as a celebration of the winter solstice.
The 19th century saw the rise in what is considered modern Christmas and holiday music. With traditions such as tree decorating, giving gifts, and holiday parties becoming more and more a part of the celebration, so did music. Classics such as ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’, ‘Away in a Manger’, ‘The First Nowell’, and ‘Jingle Bells’ were showcased.
A more modern spin was put on holiday music in the 20th century with hits such as ‘White Christmas’, ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, ‘Jingle Bell Rock’, and ‘Blue Christmas’ were released.
Overall, Christmas and holiday music are a great way to remember why we celebrate this time of the year and usher in the holiday spirit in a spectacular way!
